IT'S 11:59 ARE YOU READY FOR YOUR GOVERNMENT'S SHUTDOWN???

Yes people this is the final hour and where do YOU stand?  People have urged, and urged, and urged, and urged.....for years for voters to choose their politicians wisely. However, too many of us have taken such advice for granted and complain when the crisis comes. When a crisis hits, there's not too much you can do when in reaction mode; but in proactive mode you can counteract whatever problems may arise.  Now, in less than three days our government will shut down if they do not reach a compromise over the remaining budget for this fiscal year. The republicans are now acting on the demands of the steamship known as "The Tea Party." While I do not support the Tea Party, I do admire and respect their vigilance. They have many discrepancies with certain things and instead of being passive they are taking a stance all over America to voice their opinions. How come no one else is able to rally as forceful as they have?? Are they the only ones who want to change something about their country? Probably not, but their visibility certainly suggest so. So here lies the problem. The Tea Party from the beginning has wanted to bring an end to funding in education, funding for Planned Parenthood, funding for Medicaid and the laundry list goes on for days. Cutting funding in education means more teachers are laid off, more schools close, and more of our students recieve a cash in education that they cannot cash. Planned Parenthood provides birth control among other pregnancy prevention tips for those who financially do not have anywhere else to recieve such services.  The democrats have offered a bill that would allow government agencies to continue while cutting 61 billion dollars from the budget, but the Republicans say, "Oh no that's not enough we want to have the greatest spending cut in history, let's cut 6 trillion dollars in federal spending.” So because each group has two totally different stands on how the budget should be cut they’re at a standstill until a greater compromise can be reached. Democrats are fighting to keep the government running while the tea party is shouting, “shut it down baby shut it down.” The government shutdown will affect you in the following ways: If the government closes shop after Friday, the IRS will stop processing paper tax returns, the Small Business Administration will stop making loans and federal home loan guarantees will be put on hold. Additionally, almost 800,000 federal employees will be placed on furlough and will not receive a paycheck to handle their expenses until the shutdown ends. Some of the government's biggest jobs, like defense and medical research, would also take a hit. U.S. troops would be paid through April 8, but after that, paychecks to members of the military including those in war zones, would stop. The National Institutes of Health will stop accepting new patients, and put clinical trials on hold. At the IRS, paper tax return filings -- about 30% of all returns -- would be put on hold, but electronic filings would be processed. The Environmental Protection Agency would stop reviewing environmental impact statements, which will slow crucial energy related projects. E-Verify, the Department of Homeland Security program that helps businesses determine the eligibility of employees, would be suspended, which could lead to hiring delays. What I am urging is for us, we as Americans with a common goal, to live a prosperous life and leave a better tomorrow for our children must stand up and act!!!! What will it take for us to take to the streets and direct our future in the manner Dr. King and so many of our forefathers did??? We either do some now or suffer dire consequences later!! So I ask it is 11:59 and the hour is almost gone are you ready for your government's shutdown?

New Year, New Face

It's that time again! Time to pull out the "Happy New Year" caps, crowns, glasses, etc. So, this would be the perfect opportunity for you to try something different with your makeup. New Year's Eve is a fun, lively, and exciting time, so your makeup should be fitting for the occassion! You want to look a little bolder than you do every day. If you are going to the club, a party, an evening at home, or even church, I have a few tips to help you create the perfect look.

Eyes may be the first feature people see when they look at you. Try something that you've never thought of wearing before. Pull out those greens, purples, and yellows that you've been afraid to wear on a daily basis. Emphasize them with a sweep of glitter. Wear the darkest eye liner that you can find, or even try eccentric colors; like electric blue. If you're a cry baby, please make sure your mascara and liner are water proof. No "morning after" faces! And don't forget to throw on the falsies! Yes, this is a special occasion, so you can wear them.

Cheeks must be highligted in order to properly lift the face. If you are going to wear a bold eye, then you should wear a neutral colored blush, or just sweep on a little bronzer. If you are planning to wear a more toned down eye, then you can try one of the bold colors that you've always wanted to try.

Lips complete the package. If you are planning on wearing a bold eye, keep the lips soft and sheer with a natural color, or a soft pink. If you are wearing a soft eye, then you can make a bold statement with the lips. Brush on that bright red, plum, fuschia, etc.! Just make sure there is a balance. Don't wear a heavy lip with a heavy eye!

If you follow these guidelines, I can guarantee you will knock 'em dead with the most glamorous face in the room, even at church:)

Until next time, lovely ladies....

My Rapist Was Also My Friend

My Rapist Was My Friend

Sitting watching Tyler Perry's latest masterpiece "For Colored Girls", I was prompted to evaluate a familiar scenario in the lives of many rape victims. One of the characters in the story (Yasmine) who was sultry, beautiful, assertive, and very protective of who she gave her heart to; fell victim to rape. A man who pursued her, wooed her, and wined and dined her stole her most precious gift. As the movie played the camera honed in on the clock sitting on a coffee table. The clock became symbolic of time, and time symbolized the loss of innocence, and the loss of innocence hurts so much because the taker is someone you thought you knew. As this character sits on the examination table of a hospital she reflects on her brutal attack. Because she knew her attacker the detective asks her repeatedly if she's sure she hasn't misconstrued his actions or almost inferring that she has brought this on herself. It is in this moment that we get to our question at hand. Yasmine begans a lengthy soliloquoy where she begans is it because we know these men that makes them less of a threat? I raise the same concern on this subject as the character in "For Colored Girls", why is it that the men we know hurt us the most?? The men who take the time to be courteous to us, open doors for us, and engage in relationships are the same ones who conspire to decieve us and rape us of the things we love. Raping us does not always entail a physical rape. We can be raped mentally, emotionally, and socially, and sometimes the scars from those instances are just as damaging. We are raped every day in mainstream media with music, and commercials that attempt to objectify us and turn us in to mere meat and things to be collected. But what makes the pain of the rape so demeaning, and hurtful is the connection we thought we shared with the rapist. It hurts more to be victimized by someone you love, than it does by a stranger. When a stranger rapes you and leave you are left with the painful memory of his act but with strength you find the courage to move on. However the rapist you know hurts you more, because when the painful act ends you are still left with mixed feelings of trying to cope with understanding how a person you loved hurt you in a way that you will never forget. So ladies and gents I ask; who should yo be more cautious of the stranger, or the friend?

Have we lost touch!?!

Yes it's the 21st Century and technology is all the rage.... touch screens, touch tones, touch to talk; touch, touch, touch! We are touching technology but, we are becoming more and more out of touch with others!?! When is the last time we did not type a conversation, text a friend instead of stopping by, or even just verbally talk instead of twitter!?!
I personally have stepped back into reality; gone to visit family and the sick instead of checking facebook updates, having nights out with friends beside the club; doing charity work in lieu of only writing a check, etc. We need to get back to interacting with others. Sitting behind a computer may help you type fast or even create but, you will be a social misfit.
I love technology do not get me wrong! Hence, embrace the future without dismissing the past. E-mail but also snail mail (it's nice getting thing other than bills), emocate but show emotions(show the world how you feel tho' smiley faces are cool), facebook and spend time face to face! Stop hiding behind bits & bites go taste what the world is like with out the electrical appendages.
"If we don't know history we're doomed to repeat it!" I don't want to repeat the Dark Ages!?! I also don't want to miss the people/ places/things around evolving with out me... Live life and let's talk about it later. A heart, mind, soul, idea or person is waiting for your special Touch! Peace!

Does New=Good & Old=Bad!?!

It's ELECTION time!!! Election Day isNovember 2 for all but, some states have early voting. Anyhoo... A lot of new politicians are coming out of the "wood work"! From the Tea Party to The Rent is Too DAMN High Party; is this a good thing!?! I know that change is inevitable but, are these random 1 issue focused folk who we want holding major positions!?!

After the 1 issue that candidates are "pushing" gets solved or rejected by other powers that be; what is going to happen!?! Will nothing change or advance if we re-elect career politician because, we are just use to hearing their name or lazy!?! Should candidates have in some way worked in politics before deciding to run for office!?! Are these new party configuration hindering the U.S. politics!?!

I'm sorry to ? you to death but, I want some feed back & I want you to research and carefully evaluate your VOTE!

Observation(s): (a) Many Tea Party candidates are regular folk who woke up 1 day & said I want to be important, the others have done "odd jobs" in municipal gov't; those with out credentials just bad mouth their opponents. (b)The Rent is Too Damn High Party's name is absurd... too=also; rent is also high as opposed to what? Everything is expensive!(c) People don't want you to vote for a candidate because, he/she has previously supported "corrupt" incumbents; you can't control anyone just because you say you believe!

Who ever you believe is right, will bring your community $$ and enhance your well being; I bid no judgment just get out & VOTE, VOTE, VOTE!!!! Check that you are going to the correct polling site (redistricting may have occurred since you last voted). Do not be discouraged (ie. NY with new voting machines) try to be Informed!!! Use this privilege before the people you do not vote for take it away (complaining after you did nothing is Wrong!).

BET Hip Hop Awards

So, the BET Hip Hop Awards 2010 aired last night. Everyone was excited to see all of the rappers and their "million-men" entourages, but I was looking to see how all of the ladies rocked the black carpet. I must say that they all shined (maybe a few glitches). One thing that constantly stuck out was the hair. There were so many ladies who had transitioned their long tresses to short crops for fall. From Angel Lola Love, to Kelly Rowland, to Elise Neal (pictured left), these ladies looked radiant and youthful with less hair.

Another trend that I noticed at the awards show was a more toned down face. All looks (not mentioning Nicki Minag) were surprisingly subtle. Most ladies, like Toya (pictured top right) from BET's "Tiny and Toya," who wore an electric blue eyeliner with a baby pink gloss.

Subtle and classy would be the theme of the night. A more sleek and elegant look will definitely go a long way. Do I hear a new makeup trend for Fall?

Until next time....*Lovely Ladies*

To Thine Own Self be True/ Where's the Love!?!

Has Life become that bad where we have to make up a fantasy life!?! Even if it is that bad why create a bad fantasy? Most of us know when you lie (especially "tall tales"), you have to keep up the lie, build on it and convince yourself! 1 of the biggest lies thus far in 2010 is "Acid Girl": Bethany Storro. This chick jacked up her own face (not wrapped to tight) and blamed it on the "black woman" sketched on the left! Bethany needs a hug; she truly doesn't love herself! How can you love others when u don't love you? You can't really!?!
P.S.- Why is the "attacker" black? What's up wit that? Racism is ALIVE & Well!!! To me the sketch looks like an alteration of the "victim"!?! Who is going after white women, what's so great about 'em?? This makes me "con-fussed" ... What are your thoughts!?!

IS MAINSTREAM MEDIA EMBRACING PLUS SIZE?

In a world of tolerance and promotion of acceptance, some ask how accepting have we become? After her breakthrough performance in the critically acclaimed movie "Precious", Gabourey Sidibe has sparked much controversy some good and some bad. Many critics wonder if the acceptance of Sidibe as a successful actress also fosters the acceptance of her weight. Sidibe is considered as society would deem it, "morbidly obesed." Since her role in "Precious" the media has placed a spotlight on her health issue. Although Sidibe has begun changing her dieting habits(which was much needed) to shed some pounds and lead a healthier lifestyle some wonder if mainstream media is really concerned about her health? On the other hand some critics argue that Sidibe is a reflection and symbol that big is beautiful. So many plus size stars such as; Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, and many others have been trailblazzers in lifting the self-esteem of women who have been told that being big is not sexy. So can it really be true that soicety and Hollywood as a whole are truly beginning to appreciate that curves and size are also attributes of being beautiful? Because Elle has graced Gabby on their cover can the plus-size community believe that they are accepted by mainstream media?
