IS MAINSTREAM MEDIA EMBRACING PLUS SIZE?

In a world of tolerance and promotion of acceptance, some ask how accepting have we become? After her breakthrough performance in the critically acclaimed movie "Precious", Gabourey Sidibe has sparked much controversy some good and some bad. Many critics wonder if the acceptance of Sidibe as a successful actress also fosters the acceptance of her weight. Sidibe is considered as society would deem it, "morbidly obesed." Since her role in "Precious" the media has placed a spotlight on her health issue. Although Sidibe has begun changing her dieting habits(which was much needed) to shed some pounds and lead a healthier lifestyle some wonder if mainstream media is really concerned about her health? On the other hand some critics argue that Sidibe is a reflection and symbol that big is beautiful. So many plus size stars such as; Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, and many others have been trailblazzers in lifting the self-esteem of women who have been told that being big is not sexy. So can it really be true that soicety and Hollywood as a whole are truly beginning to appreciate that curves and size are also attributes of being beautiful? Because Elle has graced Gabby on their cover can the plus-size community believe that they are accepted by mainstream media?

  1. I happen to be a huge fan of Miss Sidibe. I hope to see more of her. She's fantastic, sassy, and quite the antithesis of her Precious Jones persona. I absolutely adore her.
